For those that are distinguishable: The Daśādhyāya-vinaya states: 'In a village where there is no monastery, when one first builds a monastery and has not yet demarcated a boundary, the boundary of the monastery follows the boundary of the village' (a later passage says that as far as people walk and come, this is the prescribed limit; in the Dharmaguptaka, the village boundary takes the enclosure's markers), and within this, there must be no separate saṃgha. Question: If there is a monastery in an araṇya and one wishes to demarcate a boundary, where should the saṃgha assemble? Answer: The Daśādhyāya-vinaya states: 'The monastery boundary follows the village.' Now, if the perimeter enclosure's markers are not distinct from the village markers, there is no need to gather people from five li away. Therefore, a subsequent passage states that when there is an araṇya with no village and one first constructs a monastery, it is called a one-krośa boundary. Hence we know that if there was already a monastery, it is identical to the village boundary. In the vinaya, the four boundary markers of the saṃgha and the village do not distinguish two boundaries. Only if the enclosure's markers are not complete may one assemble the saṃgha in accordance with the araṇya [boundary].
