若受戒等生善門中，但取相淨，便堪足數；前人尊仰，便成法事。故開停僧殘行法。犯戒和尚，但令不知，應受戒事。《薩婆多》云：不得用天眼耳知他惡法，但以肉眼見聞等。廣如〈足數〉法中。

If it is within the category of generating good, such as receiving the precepts, so long as their external signs are pure, they are qualified to make up the quorum; if the recipient reveres them, the formal act is thereby accomplished. Therefore, it is permitted to suspend the penance procedures for saṃghāvaśeṣa. For an upādhyāya who has broken the precepts, so long as people are not aware of it, the act of receiving the precepts should proceed. The Sarvāstivāda[-vinaya-vibhāṣā] states: 'One must not use the divine eye or divine ear to detect another's evil acts; one uses only the physical eye to see, hear, and so forth.' This is detailed in the chapter on 'Making up the Quorum.'
