問：此律宿欲不成者。若明相未了，羯磨已竟，而說戒、自恣未竟，得經明不？答：不成。故《僧祇》中：若七萬、八萬人自恣，恐明相出者，應減眾，界外自恣。《四分》中：若明相欲出，開略說戒。故知宿欲不被所為事也。

Question: In this Vinaya, overnight chanda is invalid. If the signs of dawn are not yet clear and the karman has concluded, but the upoṣadha recitation or the pravāraṇā has not yet concluded, may it pass into dawn? Answer: It is invalid. Thus, in the Mahāsāṃghika-vinaya: if seventy thousand or eighty thousand people perform pravāraṇā and fear the appearance of the signs of dawn, they should reduce the assembly and perform pravāraṇā outside the boundary. In the Dharmaguptaka Vinaya: if the signs of dawn are about to appear, an abbreviated upoṣadha recitation is allowed. Thus we know that overnight chanda cannot cover the matter being undertaken.
