八者白四，如受戒法等。一者人非，受者遮難，界中不集，僧數有缺；人雖五百，一一人中，五十餘法，簡之不中，通非正數。二者法非，受前進止八種調理，及論正受執文無差等。三者事非，界相不明，衣鉢非己之類。餘非例前。

Eighth is the one motion and three proclamations (jñapti-caturtha-karman), such as the upasampadā ritual and the like. First, invalidity of persons: the candidate has obstacles or disqualifications; [members] within the boundary fail to assemble; the quorum of the saṃgha is deficient; or, although there are five hundred persons, if upon screening each and every person against the fifty-odd rules they do not qualify, none of them count toward the legitimate number. Second, invalidity of the rite: errors in the eight kinds of preparatory adjustments prior to ordination, or errors in reciting the text during the formal ordination itself, and the like. Third, invalidity of the matter: the boundary markers are unclear; the robes and bowl do not belong to oneself, and so forth. Other invalidities follow the precedents above.
