初言大界者。謂僧所常行，法食二同之界也。明量者，文中同一說戒，為界遙遠，聽十四日說者，十三日先往，不得受欲。準強百里。《毘尼母》中，同布薩界，極遠聽一日往還。雖有二文，未明里數。故《僧祇》、《五分》、《善見》並云：三由旬為量。《明了論》云：三由旬者，合角量取。亦不知由旬大小。《智論》：由旬三別：大者八十里，中者六十里，下者四十里。此謂中邊山川不同，致行李不等。《四分》衣法中，由旬準有八十里者，此據上品為言。通用所歸，準律文意，應百二十里，以下品為定。《薩婆多》云：尼結界者，唯得方一拘盧舍也。必有難緣，可用《僧祇》：二由旬內隨意結取。

First, as for the great sīmā (mahāsīmā): it refers to the sīmā where the saṃgha customarily functions, in which Dharma-proceedings and food are both shared in common. Clarifying its measurement: the text states that for holding a single upoṣadha recitation together, if the sīmā is distant, it is permitted to recite on the fourteenth day, having set out beforehand on the thirteenth day without receiving chanda. This corresponds to a full hundred lǐ. In the Vinayamātṛkā, for a shared poṣadha sīmā, the extreme distance permitted is a one-day round trip. Although there are two passages, neither specifies the number of lǐ. Therefore, the Mahāsāṃghika-vinaya, Pañcavargika-vinaya, and Samantapāsādikā all say that three yojanas is the standard measurement. The Vinayavibhāṣā says that three yojanas is measured diagonally across the corners. Nor do we know the size of a yojana. The Mahāprajñāpāramitopadeśa distinguishes three sizes of yojanas: a large one is eighty lǐ, a medium one is sixty lǐ, and a small one is forty lǐ. This refers to differences between central and peripheral regions, and between mountains and rivers, which cause journeys on foot to vary. In the robe regulations of the Dharmaguptaka Vinaya, the yojana corresponds to eighty lǐ, which is stated on the basis of the superior grade. For standard general application, according to the intent of the Vinaya text, it should be one hundred and twenty lǐ, taking the lower grade as the standard. The Sarvāstivāda says: when bhikṣuṇīs demarcate a boundary, they may only make it one krośa square. If there are unavoidable obstructive conditions, one may use the Mahāsāṃghika-vinaya: demarcate as one wishes within two yojanas.
