Fifth, appointing the īryāpatha master by a single motion (jñapti). The Dharmaguptaka states: Because disrobing outside the boundary for inspection caused the recipient embarrassment and shame, it delayed the matter of receiving the precepts. The Buddha said: One must not look upon them exposed; one should appoint someone to question them about the obstacles. The Pañcavargika states: Cause the upādhyāya to say to the karman master, 'Venerable, now perform the karman.' He also says to the īryāpatha master, 'Venerable, now receive the karman.' The Dharmaguptaka states: That precept master should ask, 'Who can serve as the instructing master for so-and-so?' The reply is, 'I, so-and-so, am able.' One should request the chanda and inquire about harmony, and the reply is, 'A jñapti karman to appoint the instructing master.' With four such answers, each can only be performed as a single rite. If one summarizes the reply as 'a karman for receiving the precepts,' no further inquiry about harmony is needed subsequently; this applies to multiple people as well, extending generally to the questions and answers. It must not exceed dawn. The precept master should declare: 'Let the venerable saṃgha listen! So-and-so seeks to receive the full upasampadā from upādhyāya so-and-so. If the time has arrived for the saṃgha, let the saṃgha consent: so-and-so will be the instructing master. Such is the motion.' Having stepped down from his seat and bowed to the saṃgha, in accordance with ordinary īryāpatha, he should go to the recipient's place.
