Next, the remaining matters are explained, further clarifying their reasons. The Pañcavargika-vinaya states: If the person is not previously known, [the precepts] should not be conferred during foggy or dark weather. In the Five Hundred Questions: It is essential that lamps or candles illuminate [the candidate]. If [the candidate] has previously received the full upasampadā, the Daśādhyāya-vinaya asks: "Have you previously been a great bhikṣu?" He answers: "I have." It asks: "Did you keep the precepts purely? When relinquishing them, did you single-mindedly return the precepts in accordance with the Dharma?" The Dharmaguptaka Vinaya has no text [on this]; if there is such an occurrence, it is likewise treated as an offense of extreme gravity (pārājika). It is fortunate to follow the Daśādhyāya-vinaya and ask this before the thirteen impediments; this is because if his answer reveals a violation, it constitutes an offense of extreme gravity. The Dharmaguptaka Vinaya states: If there are obstructive circumstances, as in the case of upoṣadha recitation, two or three persons may perform the karman at the same time, but it must not reach four. The Mahāsāṃghika-vinaya states: With one upādhyāya and one precept-master, two or three persons may receive [the precepts] together in a single assembly; but if two upādhyāyas share one precept-master, two or three persons may not receive [them] in a single assembly. The Samantapāsādikā states: When two or three persons receive the precepts at the same time, everything is identical for each; having the same monastic seniority and the same time, they do not bow to one another.
