Whether there are many people or one person, as soon as it is finished, one must record the time and season. The Dharmaguptaka Vinaya says: 'There was a newly ordained person who, not having reached the later varṣā, counted it as a year of seniority; the Buddha said this is not so.' If one records it, one should record the time and season of the upādhyāya, ācārya, and instructor, stating whether it was winter, spring, or summer, such-and-such month and day, whether before or after the meal, and up to measuring the shadow. One should beforehand take a one-foot wooden rod, erect it at midday when the ordination is completed, mark the tip of its shadow, measure it with a flat ruler, and calculate the feet and inches as the standard method. The Samantapāsādikā says: 'After receiving the precepts, immediately measure the shadow with the feet along the body, and indicate the spring or winter season.' Record the number of the saṃgha assembly. Afterwards, explain the four dependences, the four grave offenses, and so forth. If there are many recipients, as each finishes receiving the precepts, he sits below the saṃgha. When all have finished, they are gathered together before the senior seat, and the subsequent characteristics are explained to them all at once. It need not be the precept master who does this. Question: 'This newly ordained person resembles someone who has come from outside the boundary; why is the harmony [of the saṃgha] not restored again?' Answer: 'He has not come from outside; he has newly arisen right within the place.'
