In the first [part], the seven dharmas are: 1. If the saṃgha imposes a punishment upon the master, the disciple should manage the matter according to the rule, causing the upādhyāya to comply with the saṃgha; if it is imposed, he causes him to conform to the rule without defiance, seeking the removal of the offense and causing the saṃgha swiftly to absolve the offense for him. 2. If the upādhyāya commits a saṃghāvaśeṣa, the disciple should encourage and transform him according to the rule to make him confess it; for his sake he gathers the saṃgha, performs the [procedures for] concealment, the mānatva of six nights, and mānatva rehabilitation, and so forth. 3. If the upādhyāya falls ill, the disciple should attend to him, or arrange for another to look after him, until he recovers or passes away. 4. If the upādhyāya is unhappy in his dwelling place, the disciple should move it himself, or instruct others to move it. The Mahāsāṃghika-vinaya states: 'If he can preach renunciation, the cultivation of pure conduct, and the unsurpassed fruit of the śramaṇa, then even if there is no clothing or food, one should not leave the upādhyāya for the rest of one's life. If he wishes to travel abroad, the upādhyāya should see him off. If the upādhyāya is old and sick, he should entrust him to someone.' He should instruct him: 'You may travel abroad, which has great merit: worshiping various stūpas and shrines, seeing fine disciples and assemblies, and seeing and hearing much; if I were not old, I would also want to go,' and so on. 5. If the upādhyāya has a matter of doubt, the disciple should remove it according to the rule using the Dharma and the Vinaya. 6. If wrong view arises, the disciple instructs him to abandon the wrong view and dwell in right view. 7. The disciple should protect him with two things: for protection through the Dharma, he should teach him higher precept, higher mind, and higher wisdom, study, and sutra recitation; for protection through clothing and food, he should provide clothing, food, and medicine, procuring them according to what his ability can bear. These seven dharmas are mostly the same across the various schools. The Mahāsāṃghika-vinaya states: 'If the upādhyāya or ācārya commits an unlawful deed, the disciple must not use harsh words as in the manner of admonition; he should use gentle words to admonish the master,
