Second, the occasions when one is permitted to be without a master. In the vinaya, it is permitted [only] after washing the feet and drinking water that one speaks of taking dependence. The Daśādhyāya-vinaya states: If there is no good master, five or six nights are permitted; if there is a good master, remaining without dependence for even a single night constitutes an offense. The Vinayamātṛkā states: Upon arriving at another place where people are not well acquainted, two or three days are permitted to choose. This vinaya is also like this. The Five Hundred Questions states: If one does not take dependence, then in drinking water, eating food, and sitting or lying on beds and mats, one commits theft day after day. If one has passed ten rains without reciting the precepts, the offense is the same as not taking dependence.
