Chapter 10: The Correct Rite for Upoṣadha Recitation (Poṣadha, translated here as pure dwelling. The Chuyao lüyi states: this is the language of the country of Kośala. The six-fascicle Nirvāṇa Sūtra states: poṣadha means nourishment. There are two meanings: first, abiding in pure precepts; second, increasing merit. The Saṃyuktāgama says posathabha; if based on the correct original sound, it is upoṣadha: upa means severance, and vasatha means nourishment; languages of different countries vary; it is also called assembly, knowing, suitability, identicality, co-dwelling, turning, or constancy. The Sanqian weiyi states: poṣadha in the language of Qin means pure dwelling; in meaning it denotes nourishment, and also harmony. The Abhidharmakośabhāṣya names the eight precepts, calling poṣadha protection. The Vinayavibhāṣā states: in the mind it is called protection, in body and speech it is called precepts. The Vinaya refers to the poṣadha method in one place as the 'Upoṣadha-skandhaka', which is the recitation of precepts.)
