四鳴鐘集僧。不局沙彌，並須入堂。若沙彌有緣，依法與欲，後須籌數。若猶有聞疑之相，盡界求覓喚之；若無有相，依法而作。沙彌、大僧，二處各說戒者，鳴鐘之時，各集二處。應說聞鐘偈。《增一阿含》云：「降伏魔力怨，除結盡無餘，露地擊犍稚，比丘聞當集。諸欲聞法人，度流生死海，聞此妙響音，盡當雲集此。」次入堂時，便合掌恭攝致禮，說偈言：「持戒清淨如滿月，身口皎潔無瑕穢，大眾和合無違諍，爾乃可得同布薩。」說已，各依位隨次而坐。如上《五分》恭敬具儀。此是極教所遺，攝僧根本之教，不比尋常諸餘法事。

Fourth, tolling the bell to assemble the saṃgha. This is not limited to śrāmaṇeras; all must enter the hall. If a śrāmaṇera has an engagement, he transmits his chanda according to the Dharma, and afterward must be counted by tally. If there is still any sign of someone who might hear or doubt [the proceedings], search the entire boundary and summon him; if there is no such sign, proceed according to the Dharma. If śrāmaṇeras and fully ordained monks recite the precepts separately in two places, when the bell is tolled, they assemble respectively in the two places. The verse upon hearing the bell should be recited. The *Ekottarika-āgama* states: 'Conquering the host of Māra's powers, / Eliminating fetters completely without remainder, / Striking the gaṇḍī in the open ground, / Hearing it, the bhikṣus should assemble. / All those who wish to hear the Dharma, / To cross over the ocean of saṃsāra, / Hearing this wondrous resonant sound, / Should all gather here like clouds.' Next, when entering the hall, one should join the palms, respectfully compose oneself, pay homage, and recite the verse, saying: 'Observing the precepts purely like the full moon, / Body and speech luminous without blemish or defilement, / The great assembly harmonious without discord or dispute, / Only then may we participate in the upoṣadha together.' Having recited this, each sits in sequence according to his rank. As in the *Pañcavargika-vinaya* above, one should be respectful and fully endowed with deportment. This is the ultimate teaching bequeathed [by the Buddha], the fundamental teaching that gathers the saṃgha; it is not comparable to ordinary miscellaneous rituals.
