Having chanted thus, he strikes the silence-block again and says: 'May the venerable saṃgha listen! The junior-most of this assembly have already collected and guarded; those who have not received full ordination have already left (when chanting the Dharmaguptaka prātimokṣa, these words are not needed); from outside, a pure great śramaṇa has already entered. Inside and outside it is serene and quiet, free from all difficulties, suitable for distributing counters and extensively performing the upoṣadha. I, bhikṣu so-and-so, for the sake of the saṃgha, distribute the counters and perform the affairs of the upoṣadha. May the saṃgha single-mindedly be mindful and perform the upoṣadha. May the senior, middle, and junior elders each in sequence receive the counters according to the Dharma.' Having said this three times, he says: 'Include the counters of those who have entrusted their chanda.' Then he comes before the sthavira, kneels on one knee, and presents them. The sthavira then bares his right shoulder, kneels on one knee, and joins his palms; the monks all simultaneously follow the sthavira's deportment. The sthavira recites the verse: 'The adamantine, unobstructed liberation counters, / difficult to obtain and difficult to encounter, are the fruit today. / I now hold them atop my head and joyfully receive them; / all sentient beings are also like this.' Having spoken, he receives them, holds them aloft with both hands, and places them atop his head; alternatively, having received them, he may place them atop his head and recite the verse. The one who subsequently collects the counters comes before the sthavira and also observes the same īryāpatha. When returning the counters, he recites the verse again: 'Fully pure, I received this counter; / fully pure, I return this counter. / Firm in joyful equanimity without deficiency or transgression, / all sentient beings are also like this.' Then he returns the counters to him. He must not return to his seat, but wait until the offering is completed. In this manner it proceeds in turn until the bhikṣus are finished. The one who collected the counters comes to the sthavira's place and hands them over; having taken them, the sthavira counts and knows their number.
