First, pārājika: the Mahāsāṃghika-vinaya takes its meaning to be extreme evil. It is explained with three meanings: First, falling back and submerging, because by committing this offense one has no share in the fruits of the Path. Second, non-cohabitation, because not only does one lose the Path, but one no longer enters into the count of either of the two kinds of saṃgha. Third, falling down, because after relinquishing this body, one falls into the Avīci hell. The Daśādhyāya-vinaya says: falling into an undesirable place. The Sarvāstivāda explains: from fighting with Māra, by committing this offense, one immediately falls into defeat. The Dharmaguptaka Vinaya says: pārājika is like severing a person's head, which cannot be restored; if one commits this offense, one is no longer a bhikṣu; this is named after the practice being rendered unusable. It also says: pārājika means without remainder; this is named after having one's share cut off from communal acts; hence the verse says: 'Those who commit evil deeds / Are just like a corpse, / Not tolerated by the community; / Therefore one must maintain the precepts.' It is also called non-cohabitation because one may not cohabit within the two kinds of saṃgha of upoṣadha recitation and karman.
