The above fifteen natural robe boundaries are each distinct and do not overlap, which is why they have distinct names. The Vinaya states: This saṃghārāma boundary is not that saṃghārāma boundary; and so on up to the trees, carts, and storehouses, each being likewise. Yet the two boundaries of the saṃgha and the village have strong inclusive functions; though there may be trees and houses [within them], their individual names are submerged and not apparent; looking across the various boundaries, one does not debate strength and weakness. Therefore, if there is a cart under a tree, there is separately a cart boundary; outside the cart there is a tree, which also has a tree boundary, without a separate peripheral extension. If within the peripheral extension of the two boundaries of the saṃgha and the village there are tree boundaries and the like, the peripheral extension is divided between the tree boundary and the saṃgha boundary. Other cases should be understood by analogy to this. If a hall or storehouse contains carts or boats, they follow the boundary of the hall or storehouse. The Vinaya states: A storehouse accumulates and stores various vehicles. Because halls and storehouses enclose on four sides, their original barrier is strong, unlike trees, carts, and threshing floors, which have nothing external to enclose. Just as when a pure ground is incomplete, food placed anywhere does not incur a transgression. The characteristics of other boundaries are not sufficient to enclose others; if they overlap, each has its distinct boundary, as in the Commentary on the Prātimokṣa.
