First, as for listing the items in the first section: (1) fields, residences, gardens, and groves; (2) planting and sowing fertile seeds; (3) storing grains and fabrics; (4) keeping human servants and slaves; (5) rearing and confining birds and beasts; (6) coins, precious treasures, and valuable goods; (7) felt rugs, cauldrons, and kettles; and (8) elephant beds ornamented with gold and various heavy goods. These eight names are extensively listed in their full number in the sūtras, treatises, and vinayas, demonstrating that their faults make them inadmissible. Their traditional succession and sequence, as fully set forth above, do not stray from the Buddhist sūtras. Second, clarifying the faults. The other precepts are not formulated in direct opposition to worldly [standards]; this one alone is formulated in direct opposition to them, ordering that both the religious and worldly alike be universally prohibited from them; when one sees someone keeping or holding them, one knows they are not a son of the Buddha. Therefore, in the vinayas and sūtras, it is uniformly said that the four afflictions of a recluse are precisely this precept; if anyone keeps them, they are not my disciple. The Pañcavargika-vinaya also says: 'They certainly have no faith in my Dharma and Vinaya.' Because these eight kinds all augment greed, ruin the Way, defile the brahma-practice, and result in impure fruits, they are called 'impure.' The rest is as found in the primary explanation.
