Precept twenty-six: sitting alone with a bhikṣuṇī in a screened or open place. There are four conditions: first, she is a bhikṣuṇī; second, there is no third person; third, in two types of places, screened or open; fourth, transgressing by sitting together. The Daśādhyāya-vinaya states: 'In a screened place, sitting one zhang apart is a pāyattika, one zhang five chi is a duṣkṛta; two zhang or more is no offense.' The Mahāsāṃghika-vinaya states: 'Sitting together with a single bhikṣuṇī in a screened place; or a bhikṣuṇī invites a bhikṣu for food, one bhikṣuṇī sits with the bhikṣu, and another bhikṣuṇī comes and goes serving additional food. When she who serves additional food leaves, each [departure] is a pāyattika. The bhikṣu at that time should stand up and say to her, "I wish to rise," so as not to cause the other to suspect an illicit act. If the bhikṣuṇī leaves, there is no offense.' The Sarvāstivāda-vinaya-vibhāṣā states: 'For a bhikṣu to sit or stay in a screened and covered place is a shameless place where sexual intercourse can be performed.' In the Vinaya, the two screened conditions of sight and hearing are as explained in the two aniyata offenses. If blind but not deaf, or deaf but not blind, or standing and staying, all are duṣkṛtas. As for non-offenses: the bhikṣu has a companion; there is a discerning person who is not blind or deaf; walking past and falling to the ground; or being constrained by force, or in cases of danger to life or brahmacarya.
