In the first part: the generation of karma necessarily arises relying on the three poisons; but that from which the poisons arise takes the self-centered mind as its root. This principle is extensively expounded, and practitioners must know it; as in the repentance rituals, the aspects of karma are fully explained. Now, briefly stating the generation of offenses, they necessarily arise according to the three natures; the depth of the retribution received is fundamentally determined entirely by mental karma. Therefore the Vinayavibhāṣā explains: 'When breaking precepts and incurring offenses, the weight is not fixed. With a heavy mind, breaking a light precept incurs a heavy offense: with a mind devoid of shame, acting without dread; or arising from false views, claiming there is no cause and effect; or arising from lack of faith, claiming the Buddha did not institute this precept, or not believing that breaking this precept incurs this retribution; or arising from doubt—was it definitely instituted by the Buddha, or not instituted by the Buddha? Does it definitely incur retribution, or not definitely incur retribution? If one breaks it with such a mind, the offense incurred is heavy. If one does not break it with such a mind, and transgresses the precept accidentally, what is heavy turns to light.' Now, following the three natures, the aspects of offenses are fully listed.
