The fifty-second precept: sporting in water. The Sarvāstivāda-vinaya-vibhāṣā gives four reasons: First, the Buddhadharma is revered and should properly be respected, and entering water to play damages it not lightly; second, it disrupts deportment and invites worldly criticism; third, it hinders and wastes one's proper practice; fourth, one also loses right mindfulness. Three conditions: first, it is water; second, there is no justifying condition; third, entering it to play constitutes an offense. In the Vinaya, 'playing' means giving free rein to one's desires, drawing in the water with one's hands, splashing water at one another, or even scooping water in a bowl to play with it—all incur pāyattika. Apart from water, if one plays with juice or alcohol, it is a duṣkṛta. The Mahāsāṃghika-vinaya states: Splashing water mutually between water and land incurs duṣkṛta; if both are in the water, it is a pāyattika. The Pañcavargika-vinaya states: Rolling snow into balls or playing with dew on grass tips incurs duṣkṛta. In the Mātṛkā: Even dripping water onto the ground is a duṣkṛta. Exceptions in the Vinaya: If one is traveling and wades through water, or dives into water to retrieve sand, stones, and other items; or if, having learned the art of swimming, one swims, swinging the arms and paddling through the water, causing splashes—these do not constitute an offense.
