Second is the unwholesome mind. This means knowing and understanding the precept characteristics, or being unlearned; slighting the net of teaching and disparaging the Buddha's words. As the Vinayavibhāṣā states: 'There are four kinds of coarse, evil statements that constitute offenses: first, a turbid and heavy mind of greed, hatred, and delusion; second, lack of faith in karmic retribution; third, not cherishing the precepts received; fourth, slighting the Buddha's words; intentionally committing them brings heavy retributions.' Corroborated by this text, because there is no shame and from the beginning no reform or repentance, this is an unwholesome mind. Thus the Tattvasiddhi-śāstra states: 'Killing an ant with a harmful mind is heavier than killing a person with a compassionate mind.' Because the root karma is heavy, one definitely receives retribution; even if one repents the pāyattika offense, the karmic path is not eliminated. As in the Daśādhyāya-vinaya: Devadatta caused a schism in the saṃgha, and after committing a sthūlātyaya, the Buddha had him repent it within the saṃgha, yet as for the karmic path, he still fell into Avīci. Thus the Niraya-sūtra states: 'First, the commitment of karma is fixed; second, the reception of retribution is fixed; the spiritual power of all Buddhas cannot overturn them.' This is extensively set forth at the end of the roll.
