Sixth, receiving again. According to the Sarvāstivāda school, precepts are not generated again, nor are they received again, and offenses are not violated again; they remain constantly fixed according to their original basis. Therefore, an arhat's mind has middle- or lower-grade precepts. If so, why are there weak and non-weak precepts? Answer: This refers to the subsequent practice, not the essence of upasampadā. It can also be that the manifest precept exists in a single thought-moment and is fixed according to a single grade of mind; the non-manifest is non-mental and lasts throughout life, so it has increases and diminutions according to subsequent practice. Therefore, the Tattvasiddhi-śāstra says: Someone asks, is the prātimokṣa generated again? It answers: Within a single day, one receives the seven wholesome disciplines; as one attains the stages of the path, one further obtains discipline, while what was originally obtained is not lost, and the superior one takes the name. The seven wholesome disciplines refer to the five precepts, eight precepts, ten precepts, full precepts, dhyāna precepts, concentration precepts, and path-concomitant precepts. As stated in the Sarvāstivāda Master-Disciple Transmission: Receiving them again increases them to the upper grade, without losing one's original monastic rains (vassā). The Biographies of Eminent Monks states: In the tenth year of the Yuanjia era of the Song dynasty, Huizhao and others of Qihuan Monastery received the great precepts again from the Indian monk Saṅghavarman. When someone asked the reason, he replied: "Because of doubt that the previous upasampadā was either middle or lower grade, seeking further enhancement and superiority, we therefore needed to receive them again. The order follows the original monastic rains."
