五次釋其文。五階之位，如前所列。以犯不孤起，託境關心，以成其業。但以境有優劣是非，心有濃淡錯誤。或心境相應，犯齊一品；而業有輕重，八品未均。或心不當境（人非人想疑，非時時惡疑）；或境不稱心（非人人想，無主主想）。境犯心不犯（地非地想）；心犯境不犯（非地地想）。有斯差降，境想明須。

Fifth: next, explaining the text. The grades of the five stages are as listed before. Because an offense does not arise in isolation, it relies on an object involving the mind to accomplish the karma. But because objects have superior, inferior, right, and wrong, and the mind has strong, weak, and mistaken states. Either mind and object correspond, and the offense is equal in one grade; yet karma has grave and light, and the eight grades are not uniform. Or the mind does not hit the object (human, thinking or doubting it is a non-human; improper time, doubting proper or improper time); or the object does not match the mind (non-human, thinking it is human; unowned, thinking it is owned). The object is violated while the mind does not violate (earth, thinking it is not earth); the mind violates while the object is not violated (non-earth, thinking it is earth). Because there are these gradations, object ideation is clearly required.
