In the first part, relying on the verse in the Vinayavibhāṣā, which says: 'And the five methods for elevating from offenses.' The commentary says: If a person commits a saṃghāvaśeṣa and seeks deliverance, if one wishes to perform the deśanā karman for him, this person must certainly first retain and keep in mind the five methods of elevating upwards, and only then perform the karman. First, observing the marks of the saṃghāvaśeṣa offense. Second, screening the person to know the marks of concealing the offense or not concealing the offense. Third, observing the training precepts belonging to categories of karma in order to screen the assemblies such as the four divisions. Fourth, observing the training precepts corresponding to the karma in order to execute karmans such as the one with a motion and three announcements. Fifth, observing within the thirteen residual offenses, whether for one day and one night, etc., there was concealment or no concealment, in order to reveal stages such as with-concealment or without-concealment and establish parivāsa, mānatva, and so forth. As for these five methods, the saṃgha must examine them; only then may one elevate a person from the offense. 'Method' is equivalent to rule. Explaining these five rules constitutes five sections. The reason it is called 'elevating upwards' is that previously one fell into the place of committing the offense, hence it is called 'below'; because the offense continued in succession, it obstructed the non-informative precept of following compliance from arising. Now, if one repents, taking into account the cessation of the succession, one again attains pure upholding; because of the protection of the counteragent, the precept-dharma arises in succession, which is called 'elevation'; the second, white dharma turns over the former low state at the time of committing the offense, hence it is called 'upward'; therefore repentance is collectively called the method of elevating upwards. Furthermore, knowing deśanā: here it is translated as disclosure, meaning that this repentance is a method of disclosure. Therefore, if one wishes to practice elevating upwards, one must know the five methods.
