Fourth, explaining the quantity of precepts generated. This was briefly clarified above. Now it is set forth again because worldly people are often confused, and so it is expounded at length, with the intent of recognizing the characteristics and knowing the principles, so as to rescue oneself as well as others. The number of precepts generated is immeasurable according to the objects. To state the essentials, they do not exceed the sentient and the non-sentient, or the two truths of existence and non-existence, which encompass all characteristics completely and become manifest according to the objects. To speak briefly, they are the realms of earth, water, fire, wind, space, and consciousness, and the five dusts of form, sound, smell, taste, and touch; up to the three periods of past, future, and present, and phenomena such as the realm of phenomena (dharmadhātu); as well as the sentient beings of the six destinies, the intermediate state (antarābhava) outside the destinies, and the four modes of birth—from all of these, one also generates and obtains the precepts.
