The *Sarvāstivāda* states: 'Toward non-sentient things, one also obtains immeasurable precept-goodness and merit. For example, throughout the trichiliocosm, down to the boundary of the earth, if one harms and damages as many things as there are dust motes, one incurs offenses for all of them; turning evil into good, at each dust mote, one obtains precept-goodness; up to a single blade of grass, a single leaf, or a single flower, reversing offense and according with merit, all enter the gate of the precepts.' Therefore the *Upāsaka-śīla-sūtra* states: 'The great earth is boundless, and the precepts are also boundless; grasses and trees are immeasurable, and the precepts are also immeasurable; the virtue of the precepts is as high and deep as empty space and the great ocean, being likewise.' Proved by these texts, the principle extends throughout the dharmadhātu, and the meaning must be revered and upheld.
