Second: The owner suffering loss through consignment. The Daśādhyāya-vinaya states: A bhikṣu consigned goods over a long distance, and they were damaged along the road. The Buddha said: If he handled them with good intention and they were broken, he should not make restitution; if he broke them with bad intention, he must make restitution. If a bhikṣu consigns property to a householder, and it is lost because the householder did not look after it properly, he should demand restitution. If a bhikṣu consigns property to a householder, or a householder consigns property to a bhikṣu, it is as stated in the two cases above. If one borrows another's property, regardless of whether the intention was good or bad, if it is damaged, one must make full restitution in all cases. Nowadays, when people wash water-pitchers and bowls for others and accidentally break or lose them, restitution is often demanded; according to the amount reached, a grave offense is incurred.
