Untimed beverages: The Mahāsāṃghika-vinaya states: The broth of any beans, grains, or wheat boiled without the heads bursting open; ghee, oil, honey, rock sugar, fourteen kinds of fruit beverages, and raw fruit juices must be purified with water. If there is residual water at the bottom of the vessel, or it is splashed by rain, it is also called pure. The Daśādhyāya-vinaya states: If grapes are not purified with fire, or the juice is not purified with water, or either is unpurified, it should not be drunk; if both are pure, it may be drunk. Based on this, it applies generally to the four medicines, in order to spoil the flavor and eliminate craving. The Samantapāsādikā states: Śāluka beverage (meaning pounded lotus root juice that has been clarified), all tree fruits, all leaves except edible greens, all flowers, and all grass fruits—excluding sweet bottle-gourds, winter melons, sweet melons, and coconuts—may be consumed at the improper time. The Vinayamātṛkā states: If one obtains various fruits and cannot finish eating them, one may crush them, take the juice, and drink it. If before the first watch of the night it turns into vinegar, it may not be drunk, because the nature of alcohol has already formed. The Vinayavibhāṣā states: Parched rice roasted until charred black, with other medicines cast into it and brewed into a syrup, is also called untimed beverage. The Dharmaguptaka Vinaya states: Eight kinds of beverages drunk in ancient times by desire-free rṣis are pears, sour jujubes, sugar cane, kṣīrikā fruits, grapes, śāluka, and other beverages. If it intoxicates people, it should not be drunk; if drunk, it is dealt with according to the Dharma. The Vinayavibhāṣā states: It must be strained to remove dregs and clarified like water; if there is turbid juice mixed with timed food, if swallowed gulp by gulp, one incurs a pāyattika for each.
