Fourth, miscellaneous analysis: In the two cases of dānapati purification and incomplete purification, regardless of whether inside or outside, day or night, if one stays overnight and cooks together, there is no fault, but one must not touch [the food]. In the two kinds of purification by designation and karman, bhikṣus are permitted to enter and inspect, guarding only against the appearance of dawn; if they share the same place [overnight], it spoils only the eating utensils, and one must further turn the utensils to make them pure, as there is the fault of keeping overnight and cooking. If one repairs an old place to make a designated [pure site], the Mahāsāṃghika-vinaya states: 'If the saṃgha has dwelt in a monastery past the first watch of the night and wishes to make a designated pure site, only if the dwelling place is ruined, the state undergoes rebellion, and a new king is not yet established, can it then be accepted and made; if these conditions are absent, but the dwelling place and the village are both abandoned for two years, it may be termed a designated [pure site]; if one still does not accept and make a designated pure site, storing food to keep overnight inside and cook inside [incurs an offense].' Question: 'Once the pure site has been demarcated, if one can watch cooking inside, why does one not commit the offense of internal cooking?' Answer: 'Cooking follows the place: even if there are no people within the great sīmā, one commits the offense; staying overnight follows the person: if there are no people within either sīmā, one does not commit the offense.'
