Second is explaining cooking for oneself. The Mahāsāṃghika-vinaya states: If in an araṇya the kappiyakāraka is ill and there is no [other] kappiyakāraka, after obtaining pure grain, a bhikṣu may personally hull it and make gruel to give to the kappiyakāraka; if the kappiyakāraka does not eat it all, he must not eat it himself. (According to the Daśādhyāya-vinaya, if there was no prior shared intention and it is given with a single mind, it is also permissible.) The Mahāsāṃghika-vinaya states: If a kappiyakāraka is hard to find and a bhikṣu wishes to make food himself, he should personally wash an ungreased utensil, add water, and make it boil over natural fire. (This is physical purity. Utensils of the saṃgha have grease and are not suited for natural fire; take heed of this.) Have the kappiyakāraka put rice into the boiling water, after which he must not touch it further; have the kappiyakāraka boil it, after which one may place a piece of wood horizontally on the ground; with the bhikṣu above it, have the kappiyakāraka place the food utensil on the wood, verbally say "Receive, receive," and only then personally cook it until done to give to the sick person, not letting anything unreceived fall into it. Even cooking vegetables until wilted follows the above procedure. Ginger decoction also must not be cooked by oneself, because it alters what is raw. If one begs cold food and heats and boils it oneself, there is no offense. When preparing food, if the kappiyakāraka is young, one may hold his hands to teach him to rinse, teach him to pour, dish up rice, and so forth.
