初四藥者。若是時藥，定有宿煮；以資用強，常須服故。餘之三藥不加法者，一同時藥；若為病緣而加聖法，則有通局。非時藥者，過中明相未出來，服用皆得；若明相出，失其口法，殘宿、惡觸、非時生焉。七日藥者，作法加已，內淨厨中，開無殘宿、惡捉；八日旦起，具罪如後。盡形壽者，必是熟死無生種相，律開內宿、內煮、自煮。《僧祇》：自煮薑湯結犯者，謂有生分（準此，準開三罪；七日不合同宿）。《十誦》：石蜜漿舉宿，病人開飲（應是難緣）。《四分》：殘宿穌油，開灌鼻等。餘不淨藥，不合加法，《十誦》正文。

First is the four medicines. If it is timely medicine, there is definitely overnight storage and cooking; because its supportive use is significant, it must always be taken. As for the other three medicines, when the ritual formula is not added, they are identical to timely medicine; if the holy formula is added for a cause of illness, there are allowances and restrictions. As for untimely medicine, from after midday until the appearance of dawn has not arisen, taking and using it are both permissible; if the appearance of dawn arises, its spoken formula is lost, and remaining overnight, improper touch, and untimely use arise. As for seven-day medicine, after performing the formula to add [permission], inside the pure kitchen there is an allowance without remaining overnight and improper holding; when the eighth day dawns, all the offenses apply as below. As for lifetime [medicine], it must be thoroughly cooked, dead, and lacking the nature of seeds that sprout; the Vinaya allows storing overnight within, cooking within, and cooking for oneself. The Mahāsāṃghika-vinaya states: Cooking ginger decoction oneself constitutes an offense, meaning because it has an element of life. (According to this, the three offenses are exempted by analogy; seven-day [medicine] should not be stored overnight in the same place.) The Daśādhyāya-vinaya states: If rock sugar syrup is kept overnight, a sick person is permitted to drink it (this must be due to difficult circumstances). The Dharmaguptaka Vinaya states: Overnight ghee is permitted to be dripped into the nose, etc. As for other impure medicines, it is not appropriate to add the ritual formula; this is the explicit text of the Daśādhyāya-vinaya.
