Second, regarding substance: The Vinaya says: Broadly speaking, there are two kinds: clay and iron. The *Pañcavargika-vinaya* mentions using white-bronze bowls; the Buddha said: 'This is the way of the tīrthikas; keeping it incurs an offense.' The Buddha fashioned a bowl mold himself to serve as a model for later times. The *Daśādhyāya-vinaya* says: Keeping bowls of gold, silver, lapis lazuli, copper, pewter, wood, stone, etc., is non-Dharma and incurs an offense (the *Dharmaguptaka-vinaya* is also like this). The *Pañcavargika-vinaya* says: Keeping a wooden bowl is a sthūlātyaya. The *Mahāsāṃghika-vinaya* says: Because it is the mark of tīrthikas, and moreover it absorbs dirt and grease. In the world today there are bowls made of hemp-fiber with wheat paste, unpolished clay bowls, lacquered bowls, and porcelain bowls; all of these are non-Dharma, and in principle must be destroyed.
