If due to circumstances one lodges overnight in a monastery, one must not lie on the beds or mats of the saṃgha, but should pad them with one's own belongings; nor should one lie inside the quilts of śramaṇas (one ought to provide offerings oneself to give to the saṃgha; how could one damage the offerings of others and harm one's own vessel of goodness?), nor engage in teasing, laughing, and discussing non-Dharma matters. When the śramaṇas have not yet slept, one must not go to sleep first, in order to eliminate arrogance. Furthermore, do not sit on the beds or mats of the saṃgha, which constitutes showing contempt for the saṃgha. In secular society, the seats of noble gentlemen are still not permitted to be mounted by lowly persons; how much less should one casually compare oneself to eminent monks of the supramundane! For this reason, the sūtra says that sharing a bed with a monk causes half of one's body to wither. Such conditions are explained in detail elsewhere. When the next morning arrives, rise before the śramaṇas (cultivating the practice of reverence).
