The Samantapāsādikā states: When sleeping, one must rise early. If one sleeps after bathing, one should resolve to rise as soon as the hair is dry; in this manner, let the shadows cast by starlight and moonlight serve as the standard measure. The Three Thousand Deeds states: When lying down, one should have the head facing the Buddha; second, do not lie looking at the Buddha; third, do not stretch out both legs together; fourth, do not lie facing a wall, nor lie face-down; fifth, do not raise the knees upright; one must check both feet with the hand and stack both knees together. The Vinayamātṛkā states: If a bhikṣu is greedily attached to sleep, neglects the three karmas, and no longer practices the path, the Vajra-wielding spirits reproach him. The Buddha said: Consuming the offerings of faith from others, one should not be indolent; during two periods of the night, one should sit in meditation, recite the sūtras, and practice walking meditation; during one period, one may rest oneself. This is called the method of lying down. The Mahāsāṃghika-vinaya states: Lying down is according to the method of the lion king (as explained above). One must not sleep until sunrise; during the latter part of the night one must rise, sit upright, and contemplate one's own karma.
