In the first: the Dharmaguptaka merely says that the three robes must be formally determined. If in doubt, one should relinquish them and determine them anew. If one possesses them without determining them, it is a duṣkṛta. But there is no recited text. Formerly, there were those who followed the method of the Mahāsāṃghika, but their protection of robes differed from the Dharmaguptaka (in the Mahāsāṃghika, it is valid throughout the whole night; in the Dharmaguptaka, it is only at the break of dawn). Now we rely on the Daśādhyāya-vinaya (because the marks of formal determination are similar). In the great robe, according to the number of stripes, there are the two differences of primary and secondary: the great robe has eighteen primary grades and six secondary grades. The seven-stripe robe has two primary grades and twenty-two secondary grades. The five-stripe robe has three primary grades and twenty-one secondary grades. Taken altogether, there are seventy-two kinds of the three robes. Undivided robes apply to all three positions, combined into one. The rest is as in the Commentary and Manual.
