《薩遮尼乾經》：或嫌塔寺，及諸形像妨礙，除滅送置餘處；如是惡人，攝在惡逆眾生分中，上品治之。《俱舍》亦爾。《智論》云：一人以佛塔惡，故壞之，更好作，得福；一人以佛塔善，故壞滅之，得罪。《僧祇》：佛塔惡壞，更好作得。

The Satyaka-nirgrantha-sūtra states: "If someone dislikes stūpas, monasteries, and various images as obstructions, and destroys them or removes them to another place, such an evil person is categorized among evil and rebellious beings, to be dealt with by the highest penalty." The Abhidharmakośa also states this. The Mahāprajñāpāramitopadeśa states: "If one person dismantles a Buddha stūpa because it is in poor condition in order to build a better one, they obtain merit; if another person destroys it because the Buddha stūpa is in good condition, they incur an offense." The Mahāsāṃghika Vinaya states: "If a Buddha stūpa is dilapidated and broken, it is permissible to rebuild it better."
