Eighth, the rules for compassionately rescuing animals. The Dharmaguptaka Vinaya states: Releasing another's tied dog with a compassionate mind, pulling out another's drowning piglet, or untying an ox tied by bandits in an araṇya—none of these is a transgression. The Mahāsāṃghika-vinaya states: If one possesses supernormal powers and wrests away people and goods from bandits, or sets free various birds and beasts, all of these, if done out of compassion, are not transgressions. The Daśādhyāya-vinaya states: A hunter pursued an animal into the monastery and demanded it from a bhikṣu; the bhikṣu said, "How could I return it to you?" After the hunter left, [the bhikṣu] harbored doubt. The Buddha said: There is no transgression. Furthermore, a deer struck by an arrow entered a monastery; the hunter said, "This deer has been struck by an arrow and must be shot and killed again; you all step aside from the arrows." The bhikṣus would not step aside for him, nor would they give him the deer, and after rebuking him, the hunter left; after he left, the deer died. The Buddha said: It should have been returned to the hunter. If out of compassion one destroys nets or animal pens, one incurs only a duṣkṛta. A pig struck by an arrow entered a monastery; the bhikṣu said, "Where is it? And whose pig is it? There is no pig owner." After [the hunter] left, he reported it to the Buddha; the Buddha said: Under such circumstances, one should speak in another manner; there is no transgression.
