One should collate and clarify the various [Vinaya] lineages to establish the ritual for renunciation. In an open area, sprinkle it with scented water, seven paces on each side, hanging banners at the four corners. In the center, place one seat intended for the one renouncing household life; also set up two superior seats intended for the two masters to sit. The one who wishes to renounce household life wears their original lay garments, bows in departure to parents and elders, and recites these verses aloud: / 'Transmigrating within the three realms, / Entangled in affection and love, unable to escape; / Casting off affection to enter the unconditioned, / This is truly repaying affection.' / Thereupon they remove their lay garments (from the Sutra on Laymen Crossing Over People). The Samantapāsādikā says: Wash with scented water to remove the smell of a layperson, and then put on monastic garments. One may only put on the nivāsana and the saṃkakṣikā, not yet having obtained [the right to] put on the kāṣāya, and then enter the ritual arena (from the Sutra on Crossing Over People). Come before the upādhyāya and kneel on one knee. The upādhyāya should regard them as a child, and must not give rise to a base or contemptuous attitude; the disciple should regard the master as a father. [The master] should explain to them head-hair, body-hair, nails, teeth, and skin. Why? Some people have previously meditated on these five; now, when their hair falls, their past karma is activated and they straightaway attain enlightenment. Just as with Rāhula: before his shaving was finished, he attained arhatship; like a ripe boil waiting to be lanced, or a lotus waiting for the sun. Having expounded the Dharma for them, sit facing before the ācārya (from the Samantapāsādikā). Anoint their crown with scented water and praise them, saying: 'Splendid, great person! Able to comprehend the world's impermanence, relinquishing the secular to incline toward nirvāṇa, rare and inconceivable!' Having instructed them to bow to the Buddhas of the ten directions, the practitioner recites these verses: / 'I take refuge in the Great World-Honoured One, / Who can deliver from the sufferings of the three existences; / I also vow that all sentient beings / Shall everywhere enter the bliss of the unconditioned.' / The ācārya then shaves their hair. Bystanders chant the renunciation hymn for them, saying: / 'Marring physical form to maintain resolute aspiration, / Severing affection without intimate ties; / Forsaking home to propagate the noble path, / Vowing to deliver all people' (from the Sutra on Crossing Over People). When shaving the hair, leave a tuft of five or three curls on the crown of the head. Come before the upādhyāya and kneel on one knee. The upādhyāya asks: 'Shall I now remove the hair on your crown, or not?' They reply: 'Yes.' Then remove it for them. Having removed it, the upādhyāya confers the kāṣāya; they receive it by raising it to the crown of their head, and having received it, return it to the upādhyāya. Repeat this three times; the upādhyāya then puts it on them (from the Samantapāsādikā), reciting these verses: / 'Great is the garment of liberation! / The signless robe of the field of merit; / Donning and receiving it according to precept practice, / Broadly delivering all sentient beings.' / Having bowed to the Buddha, circumambulate three times and recite the verse of self-rejoicing: / 'How fortunate to encounter the Buddha! / Who would not be joyous? / Merit and vows have met with the time; / I now obtain the benefit of the Dharma.' / Having bowed to the great assembly and the two masters, sit below them and receive bows from the six kinds of relatives, who congratulate on renouncing household life and departing from the secular with high and far-reaching aspirations; the parents and others all bow to them, delighting in their aspiration for the path. The hair is shaved before noon (from the Sutra on Crossing Over People). The Vinayamātṛkā states: After shaving the hair and donning the kāṣāya, one subsequently receives the three refuges, the five precepts, and so forth.
