Second, explaining the method of confessing offenses. If an offense is committed in the first class [pārājika], if it was unhidden and there is repentance, confession is also allowed, the same as the method of confession for monks. As for the single method of the second class [saṃghāvaśeṣa], there is entirely no concealing: the six nights are changed to half a month according to the regulation for nuns. Because nuns are female and weak, and their emotional defilements are many, they must rely on the great monks; this is so for both receiving [the precepts] and following [them]. If she wishes to confess, she carries it out in both assemblies, each fulfilling four persons, for half a month of penance; and when it comes to rehabilitation, each [assembly] must comprise twenty. However, as the style of the Way has gradually declined, they know how to offend but do not know repentance; even if there is a mind to repent, assembling the community is difficult to achieve; therefore it is omitted and not recorded here. From sthūlātyaya on down to duṣkṛta, each has a confession ritual, as listed in the middle fascicle; the only difference is that it is concluded within their own assembly, addressing [the other] as "elder sister"; the remaining wording is completely identical.
