余於唐武德九年六月內，爾時搜揚僧伍，無傷俗譽，且閉戶依所學撰次。但意在行用，直筆書通，不事虬文，故言多蹇陋。想有識通士，知余記志焉。

In the sixth month of the ninth year of the Wude era of the Tang (626 CE), at that time the monastic ranks were being investigated and selected without harming worldly repute, I closed my doors and compiled this work in sequence based on what I had studied. My sole intention was practical application, writing directly to communicate the sense without striving for ornate prose; hence the phrasing is largely clumsy and unpolished. I trust that insightful and discerning scholars will understand my purpose in this record.
