If demarcating in an open wilderness, first point out four markers at the four intermediate corners, and then appoint one person from among the saṃgha to chant them. The appointed person immediately stands up, bows to the saṃgha, and proclaims while standing: 'Let the venerable saṃgha listen! I, the bhikṣu [name], chant for the saṃgha the boundary marks of the great sīmā in the four directions. From the jujube tree at the southeast corner straight west to the mulberry tree at the southwest corner; from here proceeding north to the willow tree at the northwest corner; from here going east to the elm tree at the northeast corner; from here coming south returning to the jujube tree at the southeast corner. These are the external boundary marks of the great sīmā. One circuit is completed.' All three proclamations are like this. If other boundary marks are used when the occasion arises, adjust and chant them accordingly, admitting no error.
