The Mahāsaṃnipāta states: 'If in the latter age there are disciples of mine with much wealth and power, and kings and others do not discipline them, then they sever the seed of the three jewels and rob sentient beings of their eyes; though they cultivate the precepts and practice giving for immeasurable kalpas, it will all perish and be lost.' This is explained at length in the 'Chapter on Protecting the Dharma' in the twenty-ninth fascicle. It also says: 'If a bhikṣu who commits a fault ought to be disciplined, he should be subjected to hard labor for one or two months, or not spoken to, or not sat with, or not resided with, or expelled; or expelled from a country, or even from four countries where the Buddhadharma exists. Having disciplined such evil bhikṣus, the wholesome bhikṣus will receive the Dharma in peace and happiness, thereby causing the Buddhadharma to abide long without perishing.'
