Explaining comprehensively the definition of masters: fortunately, having senior elders of great virtue engenders goodness in those who come after. The Five Hundred Questions states: If a bhikṣu who has not fulfilled five rains-retreats ordains a disciple, and knowing it to be wrong still ordains him, he commits a pāyattika. If the disciple does not know right from wrong, he obtains the precepts; if he knows, he does not obtain the precepts. The Vinayavibhāṣā Commentary states: If one has already completed five varṣās, one may serve as a witness for receiving the full upasampadā and as an īryāpatha master. From seven varṣās onward, one may serve as a karman ācārya. Since these are master's positions, they may not share the same couch or seat with each other.
