Fourth, the Vinaya states: One should position the person receiving the precepts in a place where they are seen by the eye but not heard by the ear. If the person receiving the precepts is separated from the place of sight and hearing, or outside the boundary, and so forth, none of this is termed receiving the full upasampadā. Fearing they might overhear the karman, they are placed beyond hearing; still fearing an uncanonical act, the saṃgha is made to keep them in sight. In the Pañcavargika[-vinaya], because faults arose, it was permitted to place them outside the ordination platform within sight, and so forth. The Dharmaguptaka text states: Inquiring about the obstacles outside the boundary, and so forth. Nowadays, recipients are mostly within the boundary, which in principle also does no harm, according with the aforementioned Vinaya text. The Mahāsāṃghika[-vinaya] states: The instructing master should lead them to a place neither near nor far, and so forth. If multiple people receive together, they should be arranged in two places: first, where multiple people walk and stand, so that they look upon the saṃgha and generate reverent thoughts; second, leading those to be interrogated about the obstacles away from the saṃgha and away from the śrāmaṇeras' walking place, to question them about the conditions therein. If they are in the same place, it is also permissible, but there is fear that subsequent questions will be treated as before, and their minds will not be reverent. Each should be made to wear the uttarāsaṅga in reverse, along with robes and bowl, standing there.
