First, the antima-vatthu impediment. This refers to someone who previously received the full upasampadā, broke a grave prohibition, relinquished the precepts, and returned wishing to receive the full upasampadā again. This person's offense is grave; they are called 'a person outside the shore of the Buddha's ocean,' unfit to enter again into the ocean of pure precepts! Furthermore, according to the treatises: for a layperson with the five precepts or eight precepts, or a śrāmaṇera with the ten precepts, to break a grave one is likewise called an antima-vatthu [offense].
