The Mahāsāṃghika-vinaya states: 'After receiving the precepts, one must keep a water-strainer, a lawful water jar, and so forth, as in the "Subsequent Characteristics" chapter.' The Pañcavargika-vinaya states that a newly ordained person must be made to recite the precepts; if one fears his mind might retrogress, it is also permissible not to do so yet. The Samantapāsādikā says: 'When the Buddha delivered a bhikṣu, he had eight articles kept on his person: the three robes, the bowl, the sitting mat, the water-strainer, needle and thread, and an axe.' The Dharmaguptaka Vinaya states: 'Because bhikṣus were confounded with tīrthikas, the Buddha had them questioned about what season, what month, and who their upādhyāya and ācārya were.' Thus one knows the Buddha-dharma is different from tīrthikas and laypeople; upon interrogation, one knows he is not a thief dwelling [among monastics]. There are three seasons: from the sixteenth day of the twelfth month to the fifteenth day of the fourth month is spring; from the sixteenth day of the fourth month to the fifteenth day of the eighth month is summer; from the sixteenth day of the eighth month to the fifteenth day of the twelfth month is winter. The months vary by dark and bright, long and short. After the precepts are received, this is transcribed and given to him.
