Afterward, the karmadāna strikes the silence-block once and says: 'Next, distribute the śrāmaṇeras' counters.' Having said this three times: if there are śrāmaṇeras, he goes directly to their seating area and distributes them, also taking those for persons who have entrusted [their chanda]. He even makes a general announcement once throughout the saṃgha, saying, 'The śrāmaṇera counters,' in case there are bhikṣus who are about to arrive. Having collected them in this manner, he hands over the count as before. The karmadāna goes again to the sthavira's place, kneels on one knee, and receives the count. At that time the sthavira should announce: 'There are so many monks, so many śrāmaṇeras, making a total of so many.' The karmadāna then rises, strikes the silence-block, and says: 'May the venerable saṃgha listen! In this one dwelling place, one upoṣadha. There are so many bhikṣus, so many śrāmaṇeras, making a total of so many persons. Each has purely renounced household life in the Buddha-Dharma and joins harmoniously in the upoṣadha: above, conforming to the Buddha's teaching; in the middle, repaying the four kindnesses; below, for the sake of all sentient beings. Each recites the pure, wondrous verses found in the scriptures.' The Mahāsāṃghika-vinaya states: 'Pure like the full moon, / being pure one obtains the upoṣadha; / when bodily and verbal karma are pure, / only then should one perform the upoṣadha.' If the śrāmaṇeras recite the precepts in a separate place, it is as in the subsequent 'Specific Procedures'.
