Tenth, explaining the procedure for concluding the upoṣadha recitation. When one reaches the abbreviated teachings, the bell should be struck again to assemble the śrāmaṇeras, and then one recites "A wise person who can guard the precepts," and so on. When the general recitation is finished, one performs the gāthā chant of "The divine ṛṣis, persons of five supernatural knowledges." Afterwards, one performs the chant of "Dwelling in the world." This allows the reciter to compose himself with complete deportment and gives him time for modest declining. The chant before the preface is also recited from the Vinaya preface as the words of the chant. The reciter declines, saying: "I, the junior bhikṣu so-and-so, pay respect to the feet of the Saṃgha, offering my humble respects and apologies to the Saṃgha. Appointed by the Saṃgha to recite the Vinaya, I have been unmindful in the three karmic actions and have had many lapses and omissions. May the Saṃgha have compassion and bestow delight [upon me]." The members of the Saṃgha each recite the gāthā of self-rejoicing, saying: "The appearance of the Buddhas in the world is the supreme joy, / Hearing the Dharma and practicing it is peaceful joy, / The harmony of the great assembly is quiescent joy, / Sentient beings being freed from suffering is tranquil and happy joy." (Then they make bows and disperse.)
