Eighth: the intent behind the feasibility and obstruction in conducting practical affairs between the two assemblies of monks and nuns. Now, where the two assemblies share the same precepts and regulations, their affairs and procedures are identical; the rituals for their practice and application are modeled on the rules for monks; these are fully set forth in the various sections, to be applied in detail according to the affair. As for discerning the characteristics that constitute an offense, the Prātimokṣa is divided of its own accord. Those that are obscure and difficult to know are fully found in the subsequent characteristics. As for the other precepts conditioned by status—meaning differences in lightness and heaviness, mutual presence or absence, identical offense under different conditions, and those widely practiced in the present age whose varieties of characteristics are difficult to know—as well as the rites for individual practice and communal practice, they are only then listed in the distinct rites for nuns. This merely classifies their essential types and does not yet reveal their full import; the reasons for their various differences are fully contained in the Great Commentary.
