Precept 12: Bedding of black wool. These four bedding precepts are all general designations for the three robes; the ancients doubted this, and it remains unresolved to this day. The Mahāsāṃghika-vinaya: felt saṃghāṭī down to sitting mats, etc. Four conditions constitute the offense: first, pure black wool; second, making a kaṣāya; third, for oneself; fourth, completing it constitutes an offense. In the Vinaya, making it oneself or instructing another both incur a pāyattika, as above. Non-offenses: if one obtains what is already completed; if cut and ruined (originally intending to cut it); if fine and thin, folding it into two layers (originally intended later obtained); if making a mattress; if making a small square sitting mat; if making a sleeping felt; or a felt pad inside the bowl, a razor case, making a cap, making socks, making a sweat-absorbing cloth, or making a wrapper for leather sandals—none of these incur an offense.
