Precept nineteen on trading precious substances. The Sarvāstivāda-vinaya-vibhāṣā states: 'This means that by using precious substances that have been purified, one exchanges them with another to seek profit; at the very time of giving them to the other, one incurs a niḥsargika-pāyattika. This is different from the five ways of trading robes, as explained in the Precept Commentary.' In the Vinaya, trading property and goods for money and precious substances constitutes the offense; it differs only in not involving robes or food. Five conditions constitute it: first, it is money or precious substances; second, mutual exchange; third, fixing the price; fourth, for oneself; fifth, upon receiving it, the offense is committed. The Pañcavargika-vinaya states: 'One should confess before the saṃgha, not before two or three persons.' Among the non-offenses in the Vinaya: if one trades money for ornaments and implements for the sake of the Buddha, Dharma, or Saṃgha; or if one exchanges money for money, also for the sake of the Buddha, Dharma, or Saṃgha, it is permissible.
